Eine Brücke kann bei guter Pflege bis zu 20 Jahre oder sogar länger halten. Aufgrund des Zahnfleischrückgangs im höheren Alter tauscht der Zahnarzt die Brücke dann aber meist aus. Zum einen sieht der zum Vorschein kommende Brücken- beziehungsweise Zahnkronenrand nicht schön aus, zum anderen ist dieser Bereich auch sehr anfällig für Zahnkaries. Bei einem starken Kariesbefall am Übergang von Pfeilerkrone zu Zahnstumpf kann ein neuer Zahnersatz notwendig sein. Regelmäßige zahnärztliche Kontrollen sind deshalb empfehlenswert.
