Fehlen im Gebiss ein oder mehrere Zähne, können die entstandenen Lücken mit einer Zahnbrücke geschlossen werden. Eine Zahnbrücke ist ein künstlicher Zahnersatz, der an so genannten Pfeilerzähnen angebracht wird. Befindet sich die Lücke zwischen zwei Pfeilerzähnen, stützen diese beiden Zähne die Zahnbrücke, welche diese Lücke schließt. Liegt die Lücke hingegen am äußeren Rand des Gebisses, dienen die letzten Zähne, an die sich die Lücke anschließt, als Brückenpfeiler für den künstlichen Zahnersatz.

Gegenüber Zahnprothesen weisen sie den Vorteil auf, dass sie die Kaufunktionen wesentlich besser gewährleisten. Eine Brücke kann bei guter Pflege bis zu 20 Jahre oder sogar länger halten. Aufgrund des Zahnfleischrückgangs im höheren Alter tauscht der Zahnarzt die Brücke dann aber meist aus. Zum einen sieht der zum Vorschein kommende Brücken- beziehungsweise Zahnkronenrand nicht schön aus, zum anderen ist dieser Bereich auch sehr anfällig für Zahnkaries. Bei einem starken Kariesbefall am Übergang von Pfeilerkrone zu Zahnstumpf kann ein neuer Zahnersatz notwendig sein. Regelmäßige zahnärztliche Kontrollen sind deshalb empfehlenswert. Zahnmedizinische Nachrichten – Aufbissschiene Schmerzen

Eine Aufbissschiene ist eine Zahnmedizinische Apparatur, die aus Kunststoff hergestellte wird und deren Form an den individuellen Zahnbogen des jeweiligen Patienten angepasst ist. Aufbissschienen werden in der Zahnmedizin hauptsächlich zur Behandlung von Erkrankungen des Kausystems eingesetzt.
